Instructions

... Keswick has a rich extractive history from the graphite mining to the quarries that have built the town’s architecture. The museum is a great place to start your journey through historic Keswick and how the extractive sector continues to embed itself into everyday life in the town.

As a group, our first stop will be the Keswick Museum where we will take a trip into the town’s industrial past. We will then continue our walk across town before we re-converge at the designated meeting point.

The task takes approximately 2 hours. Here are some questions/ pointers to guide your walk.

1. What did you find out about Keswick?

  a. Think about: the extractive industry, the lived experiences of the mine workers, gender dynamics, the architecture etc.
  b. How is the Keswick landscape today? How much of the past is still present and how do we read into it?
  c. How much of Keswick’s industrial past is reflected in the present landscape- social, economic, environmental?

2. What are your thoughts on the importance of this industrial heritage?
